Once you have some idea wherte you want to be headed career-wise, you can plan and attack to get the skills you need

Make sure you have some sort of a plan and it shows what skills you need. Don't just chase skill willy-nilly. If you haven't tested your plan well you can waste time and money chasing skills that aren't useful (guess how I know this. I spent a year working on an Adult Learning degree only to then find out how much adult teaching positions pay - even in IT ...).

Decide whether you need formal certification to break into the area you want to be in. Look at employment ads, talk to some employers, go for an interview or two (doing interviews to learn or practice instead of to go for the job is a perfectly valid technique).
Developing Your Creativity a lightweight little primer

If you don't need a formal qualification, you may be able to get the skills you need in ways other than going on a course. Read (Google is always the place to start, but also try the library). Get hands-on practice in a club or as a volunteer. Informational interviews are a useful technique to learn fast in a rapidly changing world.
